A construction principle inspired by the kimono
Origata emerges from the observation of the traditional Japanese kimono construction
system, in which a roll of fabric is cut into geometric shapes according to a logic of
maximum optimization and minimal waste. Translating this principle into metal, the
project uses a single sheet of aluminum, cut into complementary shapes and assembled
through a visible screw system. The structure takes shape through an essential process
in which construction, material, and language coincide.
Origata is made from a 3000 x 1500 x 6 mm sheet of aluminum. With minimal waste, the
shapes of the top and legs are laser-cut, then bent according to the final design
angles. Before bending, one of the legs is engraved with the signature and logo.
The final finish is achieved through high-resistance powder coating, available in
Porro’s full range of glossy colors, combining craftsmanship and industrial technology.
The result is a collection defined by formal balance, geometric precision, and
production efficiency.

Culture, technology and research
With Origata, the Japanese designer based in New York, Nao Tamura, develops a reflection
on the relationship between design culture, industrial processes, and technological
innovation, translating a traditional principle into a contemporary construction system.
This recognition confirms the value of the research developed with Porro and the brand’s
role in the international contemporary design landscape.
